i wasn't planning to go, i saw the make-up the nite before, was going to see sean lennon the next nite, i thought i would rest. but there were no parties so i went by myself, left at like 10:15, got to the 930 club at 11:00, in time to catch the last 3 songs of buffalo daughter. too little to form an opinion tho i'm sure it all sounded relatively similar. i saw them at the tibet show a month earlier and still couldn't get a good take on them.

so then was gvsb. i had seen them 3 times before, one of which, i think it was january of '97, was an absolutley mind blowing affair, while the other two were simply excellent. i was curious to see how the new material would come off live.

opened with 'park avenue,' then another new one. maybe 'roxy?' i don't know. i knew the words, but unless i listen to an album upwards of 50 times, i never know song names. so they seemed a little tentative at first. maybe not, but the thing that got me was the sound. i had only seen them at the black cat previously. much smaller, not as fancy as the 'beautiful' 930 club. it needed to be louder. when i see them at the black cat, my ears are fucked for a couple days. i could barely hear scott's guitar and he was having problems with it later, which led to a little joke from him something like, "not that i need it much anymore." haha.

so after the first couple they went into the 'house of gvsb' stuff. out of their first 12 songs, it was pretty much split between the last two albums. some radically re-worked version of 'life in pink,' 'super-fire,' 'mzkyoulike,' 'verz cruz,' 'x-rated car,' (never heard that one live before) and 'disco 666.' i think that was all for 'house.' they delved into 'kill the sexplayer' and 'in like flynn' in their encore i think.

so that's the song part, sorry about the lack of knowledge of names from the new album. no 'one firecracker' and 'vogue thing' i know that much. no 'pleasurized.' it seems the ones i know they didn't play. anyways...

the dj was a nice touch. not really essential to most stuff, but y'know, hip and modern. eli i think played bass on only 4 songs? mostly keys/wild jumping. gotta love that. the band was pretty tight, as usual. alexis pounds with ease, johnny is the serious one. if i'm not gushing, i think it's becuz i've become accustomed to great things from gvsb. no complaints, definitely excellent, and i got another nifty as fuck t-shirt. it says 'punk ass gold power' on the back, can't go wrong. i think they played that song, cuz i remember scott saying "disco kill style."

house of gvsb afterwards was great. tone loc, young mc, rob base, can't go wrong. the bouncers were gettin' down, people were breakdancin' it was great. gotta love spontaneous shit like that. so overall, it was another excellent gvsb show, and goddamn those bastards are sexy!
