Wow, wow, wow what a show!

I swung by the club after work to see if I could find anyone from the band or Geffen or the club to plead Chris & Dave's case to get them in.  I saw a guy sitting happily on a car with AZ plates and sure enough it was Dave who informed me that I had my head up my ass (my words, not his) and that tickets would still be available at the door--sorry to cause needless panic kids.

After much waiting in line, we were let in.  Drank. A lot.  The first band were really not my cup of tea.  Very contrived and forgettable.  Bless their hearts, they played their little hearts out and seemed like a nice bunch but they smacked as being on the bill as a showcase and not an act chosen on merit.  They have an album coming out o0n Warner Bros. so...Iheard their name five times but even after reading it in rightbrain's review I can't remember it--I think it's a defensive reaction on my part.

The second band were Zen Guerilla from SF.  Knocked my socks off for the first 5 songs and then I got distracted (I'd hidden a ticket in my car for my sister and she hadn't shown up so I was a bit nervous).  Huge guy with Jesus and Mary Chain hair doing a sort of Jon Spencer thing but without the sex appeal, backed by a Blue Cheer-style group.  The drummer had some amazing expressions on his face and basically played with his eye rolled back in his head and a grimace on his face.  Any band that closes with an Iron Maiden cover can't be all bad.

Met up with Dave and Chris again (they really *are* nice folk) and was introduced to rightbrain.  He truly is a force of nature.

Found my sister stuck waiting in line outside so I waited with her...got in just as the band were hitting the stage.  Was a bit underwhelmed by the first couple of songs as the sound seemed a bit quiet and they hadn't quite caught fire.   They hit their groove after a bit though.  My sister had never seen them before and had only heard Freakonica so she was more than impressed.  "Another band to have a crush on" is how she put it.

The set list consisted of (not in order):
Park Avenue
Pstcho-future
Black Hole
Roxy
Exorcisto
a wonderfully creepy version of Satin Down
Bulletproof Cupid
Superfire
Crash 17
Disco Six Six Six
TheKindaMzkYouLike
In Like Flynn
an amazing version of Vera Cruz
Cowboy's Orbit
Kill the Sexplayer
Speedway
...I also remember them playing a song I didn't recognize until the end and I think it was Life in Pink
...also, Alexis played the drum intro to Glazed Eye but sadly they didn't do it.
All were tight, the added DJ was cool, Eli was on fire.

rightbrain forgot the story of when he went into the bathroom how Alexis was using the "pee trough" and nobody would stand next to him.

It was great meeting the folks from the list...I highly recommend it.
BTW, I respectfully disagree with the complaints about Speedway.  I've always taken GVSB's lyrics to be a bit tongue-in-cheek.  "Sock it to me lifestyle"? "Cruise your new fly self baby yeah?"  It seems like Speedway's lyrics fit right in with that...
