As Dave so illustriously described, the show was fantastic (and no lightening strikes!). It was The Superjesus that started it all off, and yes, I liked them a great deal. I really liked their hard edge mixed with the rythmic bass/drums. Top it off with the lead singer's vocals and I was hooked. Look into this band. (http://www.warnermusic.com.au/sjsite/)
The second band was more like a bad Blues Brothers cover band. I can't even remember their name. They were just annoying.
After what seemed like 4 liters of beer (Spaceland sells mugs of beer more akin to pitchers), I managed to stumble behind a curtain somewhere to find Johnny (almost thought it was Billy Idol for a minute...), and Eli deep in bass repairs. Like the drunk that I was I began rambling about the list and whether he followed it. He was cordial but more so just patient with me. He said he "checks it periodically." After a few minutes I improved his quality of life by leaving him alone. Got a quick handshake from Johnny and exited stage left. I dared not mention I was there with Dave Brookhouser. I'd've (whoa...check out that homemade contraction!) been ousted from the club for sure had I done so. After Dave's scintillating reviews of the Minneapolis "House of GVSB" parties:
"....um...Eli spun a few tunes. Not much dancing. I got really drunk. Oh yeah...Johnny was hanging on some trailer-park girl..."
I figured it best I not associate myself with him publicly.
Alexis actually seemed more in-tune with the list goings-on than any of them. He said he knew of it and thought it was really cool that it existed. We talked design stuff and I got squeezed out by adoring females.
I asked Scott if it was cool if I shot some photos of them from up front during their set. He said "Do whatever you want..." in a breath tinged by the smell of 200 cigarettes (for that reason alone I'd never French kiss him.)
Their set was good 'ol consistant GVSB. If you hated the vox on Freak, never fear. Live, they are the same ass-kicking GVSB. As I had hoped, all the Freak songs sounded great (except Speedway which I'm not fond of either). They played a few from Venus and House. The vinyl scratching not only improved their sound, but allowed songs to blend together quite well. At one point, Scott broke a string and during the time it took to switch axes, the DJ spun some beat-heavy tune and Alexis and Johnny joined in. Very cool!
I can't remember the set list. I was too busy groovin and tryin' to read my damn shutter speeds. The crowd was the usual "Too Cool Ghoul" scene now trademark to LA. I was very happy to feel the GVSB vibe again in person. It definitely had a aggressively sexy feel. Proof was my quite tactile encounter with a young Japanese girl up front. Felt just like a Sharon Stone movie! "I ruv rok an ro'" she screamed several times. What a great band!
I managed to take one good roll of black and white film. Only one roll cause I was pretty much stuck in one spot throughout the whole show. I just developed the negs tonight (they look cool so far) and should have prints by the weekend. I'll scan 'em and post them.
Go see this show!
