I was at the April 16th SUNY Binghamton GvsB show. Which basically took place in a suspiciously cafeteria-like space on campus. Opening bands were Wookie and also the Sidedoor Johnnies. The Sidedoor Johnnies were really great.
Then GvsB took the stage and were awesome. As that was five months ago, I have few specific memories except a lot of "House of GvsB" tunes, a "Kill the Sexplayer" encore, and a few new songs that they admitted were the main reason for the gig. But hey guys, thanks for coming to upstate New York to try out your new songs! (we're usually neglected by most bands up here) A solid rockin' set overall. I think the new album will be great. Since this was the first time I saw them, I was really struck with how creative Eli approaches his role as bass player/backing vocalist/keyboardist. He's all about being the mad scientist, accenting the songs with creative noise. Totally cool with so much energy and enthusiasm.
Someone yelled out "Who wins?" and the entire band immediately responded "the girls!" Scott said, "Yeah, always the girls." So true.
One thing that needs to be mentioned about this show that really sucked was the dang lighting, which was pointed straight out at the audience, pretty much blinding us most of the show. Imagine staring into blinding lights, knowing from the discordant music around you that GvsB is in there SOMEWHERE. A new experience for any veteran concert goer is being both deaf AND blind after a show.
