First Half, 1998
Well, well...the infamous news section. If I hear anything concerning the band, I'll put it in here. If you happen to know something I don't, mail me as usual.

Current News | First Half 1997 | Second Half 1997 | First Half 1998 | Second Half 1998 | All 1999

December 17

  • Last update for about three weeks, and all I really have to say is that there won't be an update for about three weeks. Happy Holidays!
  • Oh yeah, and if you have any reviews from last night's House of GVSB in NYC, feel free to send em in.

    December 11

  • We got an interesting letter to "The Nation" from Johnny, addressing the current state of the music industry.
  • Yesterday's major news has rippled through the site, with some minor updates to relevant pages.

    December 10

  • Well, ladies and gents, we now officially have something to look forward to. March 24. Mark it on your calendar. That's the tentative release date for the new album. A world(!) tour should accompany its release. Final mixing is going on in New York and Atlanta. Get psyched.

    December 7

  • Great news: the House of GVSB dance party is coming to New York City December 16. Read all about it in the tour section.
  • I got that AP article online.
  • The new album page has been updated, with more quotes and some links to articles. It's coming up, folks....

    December 1

  • FINALLY got a NWK review. Remember, it's never too late to send in one of your own.
  • Also got a pretty cool soundbite of Scott plugging Dave Brookhauser's radio show (yes, our Dave).
  • The new album was named as one of the 25 most-anticipated albums of 1998 by Alternative Press. I'll have the write-up posted whenever I get a copy.
  • Happy Birthday to me :)

    November 24

  • Argh, sorry for the lack of updates. Going home, so there won't be another until next week. But in the meantime, some small news:
  • I got some information on a rare 7" called "Red Bar" that GVSB released in the UK around the same time as "Cruise Yourself." I added it to the discography. That's the information (I can't control it).
  • The New Wet Kojak tour is over. You should be recovered by now. So be a pal and send in a review!
  • I found a site that has a streaming version of the "Super-fire" video. It's called Streamland, but too bad streaming video ain't so great in our modem-filled world. Happy Thanksgiving.

    November 13

  • A GVSB cover of the Eagles song "Witchy Woman" will appear on the soundtrack to the comic book Witchblade (no movie, mind you), due out in April. The album is being put together by Kat Bjelland of Babes in Toyland, who is also collaboriting with the band on the song. The cover, done at a "Black Sabbath pace" will also include the voices of about 20 other people, including Bjelland and Hope Nichols of Sugarsmack. Check out the rest of the sordid details in yesterday's Allstar.
  • Speaking of Babes in Toyland, member Lori Barbero (who also appears on the "Witchy Woman" cover, by the way) and Soul Asylum's Karl Mueller have decided to name their replacement for "House of GVSB" at the 400 Bar in Minnesota "House of Babes, featuring DJs Lori B and Squirmin' Karl Herman." Look for it every Tuesday night.
  • There's now a picture of the cover of the GVSB/Guided By Voices split CD in the discography, so those without it can drool some more. Thanks to Mike Donk.

    November 10

  • Wow, 4000 hits. I'm as shocked as you. To celebrate, I added some multimedia links to the discography, among other things. Font color changes to come soon.

    November 8

  • Long-time contributor Laura has submitted another twin-concert review, this one from two January DC shows.
  • Looks like the weekly House of GVSB left quite the impression on Minneapolis. Check out today's Allstar for details on how members of Soul Asylum and Babes in Toyland are taking over the Tuesday parties at the 400 Bar.
  • I'm looking for a way to redo the opinion page--any suggestions are welcome.

    October 31

  • That TBA date November 19 on the New Wet Kojak tour will be in Pontiac, MI at the 7th House. Am I going, you ask? No, I have an exam that evening. Grumble.
  • More on NWK: Addicted to Noise has finally decided to review Nasty International. Here, read it.

    October 29

  • Nope, there was no final House of GVSB in Minneapolis last night. This means that the band is probably done recording and is taking a much-deserved break. Rumor has it that after said break, they will take the House of GVSB on the road. Stay tuned.

    October 27

  • Well, maybe there WON'T be another House of GVSB tommorrow night. Numerous sources indicate that this is the case. The only hope for Minnesotans is that newspaper ad. We'll find out soon enough.

    October 23

  • Well, it looks like there will be one more House of GVSB party in Minneapolis, this one with a $2 cover charge and a strong possiblility that the band will play live. See for yourself....

    October 22

  • I added a "features" menu to the main page, where you'll find three current points of interest on the site. These should change somewhat frequently.

    October 21

  • The week of online music magazines continues:
    • First, check out an article in Allstar, written by site contributor Laura, which gives more info on the new album.
    • Then, see the results of the Addicted to Noise poll. 9% of the respondants said that GVSB are the "sexiest band in the land," 23% said they were not, and the rest of us (66%) could care less.
    • Finally, ATN have another feature on the band, this one about their weekly House of GVSB night in Minneapolis (tonight is sadly the last one). It mentions that the band may take this DJing idea on the road.

    October 20

  • Addicted to Noise has followed up its article on the band with a poll asking if the band is the "sexiest" band around. Looks like the marketing has begun....Go ahead, cast your vote today (the results will be posted tommorrow).

    October 19

  • New Wet Kojak is going on another tour! This one will be in November in the Eastern half of the US; check out the tour section for dates.
  • The section on the new album is complete. Be sure to check it out.

    October 17

  • Site changes all over the place. Backgrounds have been altered, graphics have been added, and the frame has evolved into what it is now. Content changes of note include another detailed report from Minnesota, as well as an updated link to the recently-relocated Vera Cruz. Other minor changes throughout, but I'll let you find them :)
  • You also might notice a few links to an information page about the new album (like at the top of this page). I assure you that page will be up in the next few days.

    October 16

  • Biggest news in months. There's a feature on GVSB in today's news section of Addicted to Noise. It gives quite a few details about the new album, as well as the band's musical progression. I'll add a new section to the page later tonight or tommorrow dedicated to information about the upcoming album. See you there!

    October 14

  • Slick new frame is up. It looks best with Netscape 3 or above, but that may change in time. Hey, the main page's logo has been altered too. Expect other makeovers throughout the site as my procrastination increases.

    October 10

  • Startling revelations about politics in the Minnesota nightclub scene: all of this and more in this week's House of GVSB report from Dave.

    October 7

  • Allstar is reporting that Eli is remixing "Liberty Calls," a song from Mike Watt's new album Contemplating the Engine Room, which comes out today. While Eli's version will only be available through promotional CDs, it will be used in the Spike Jonze-directed video of the song.

    October 6

  • The news just keeps flooding in from Minnesota. Apparantly, this week's House Of GVSB night will be cut short, if not cancelled. Read all about it. Also on that page now are some pictures of the 400 Bar and some ads for House of GVSB.

    October 1

  • This week's tale from Minnesota has Dave talking to the band on AM radio about recording, etc. Definitely worth checking out.
  • Oh yeah, sounds are back online.

    September 27

  • Dave has sent in another House of GVSB report. Although he didn't attend this time, it's still worth a read.

    September 24

  • I finally created an updated contributors page. Thanks again to all. Also added a review of an April Binghamton show.

    September 18

  • Wilmington is back online! It has a new design, and, more importantly, a VERY comprehensive archive of GVSB sound files. Be sure to check it out and bookmark it.
  • Dave has sent in yet another report from Minnesota, where the band is hosting a weekly "House of GVSB" night at a local bar. This week's episode includes tales of clowns, as well as pictures!
  • Speaking of sounds, the sounds on this site (which will probably never be updated again after seeing Wilmington's sound page) will be offline for a few days, but shall return.

    September 14

  • I got a BUNCH of server space (35 Megs worth) from the wonderful University of Michigan Engineering School. What does this mean? All sounds are now online and available for download! And, I'll put some more up soon.
  • This page has reached the 3000 hit milestone! A million thanks to all supporters.

    September 10

  • Another report from Minnesota Dave has come in. All should thank Dave.

    September 8

  • Sadly, Wilmington, another GVSB page has gone down at least for a while. Sebastian, the site's maintainer, says it may return one day.
  • I added another article, this one a review from Rolling Stone magazine.

    September 6

  • Sorry, just some more minor site changes, most notably a digest option when subscribing to the Sevenseas mailing list.

    September 3

  • We got a review of one of the weekly GVSB-run parties at a bar in Minneapolis. Thanks again to Dave; let's hope he keeps them coming.

    September 2

  • I reorganized the images page. More little updates like that in the coming days.

    September 1

  • Hey, we got our first lame negative opinion about the band! Tis all.

    August 28

  • Good news for anyone in Minneapolis: GVSB is going to have a special "House of GVSB" night every Tuesday night at the 400 Bar for the next 4-6 weeks (they'll be in town recording). No live performances, but the band members will be there "spinning records." Thanks to Dave for the scoop.
  • Vera Cruz was heard playing on a Seattle radio station. Just seems notable.
  • I'm going back to school in the next few days, so don't expect an update until mid-week (like there's anything to report in this dead zone).

    August 21

  • Sorry, I slowed down loading times by integrating images into some of the pages of the site. In an ironic twist (yeah), the images page was spared, but only because it'll be remodeled soon.

    August 18

  • Hey, check out Allstar News for a blurb about Mr. Remix Eli Janney working on a Duran Duran song:
" 'Simon [LeBon] liked something that Girls Against Boys had done,' he continues enthusiastically, 'so we hooked up through the record company for Eli Janney to work on one of the tracks. It's always interesting to me to see other people's takes on a song, if it lends itself to that sort of thing. His was much more industrial/ alternative- sounding. I think it's quite good... There are people whose work we really like, and it's always interesting to see what you get back.' "
Oops, the magazine also falsely put up a picture of that other GVSB bass player instead of Eli.

    August 16

  • I made it a little easier to subscribe to Seven Seas, the GVSB mailing list, by adding to the main page a form where you enter in your email address to subscribe. Also, there is now a digest version of the list. See the list's page for more details.

    August 13

  • I read that electronica band Prodigy will open for Rage Against the Machine in an "upcoming tour," perhaps leaving GVSB out of the South America picture. We shall see.
  • Another site change: I organized the articles page.

    August 11

  • Frames look okay now, although everything looks kinda bad with a super-bright monitor. But you shouldn't notice, since you should be blind by now.

    August 6

  • Site change of the day (probably the last major one in a while): new single frame. See for yourself if you can't already.
  • I'll be out of town for a few days, so, for a change, there won't be an update in a while.
  • Argh! I just viewed the frame at work, and some of the frame's images look pretty bad on that monitor (brightness or something). No time to work on it now, as I leave for the airport in a half-hour, but I promise it'll be better when I return. Just try and remain calm until then.

    August 5

  • The band finally started their new album today, with a tentative February release. My bet is April though....
  • It's been confirmed that they did play through the typhoon at Japan's Fuji Festival last weekend.
  • As you can see, I'm playing around a lot with the backgrounds. Please tell me what you think of the current setup. Can you see the text clearly? Is the background image distracting? Please say so. Thanks.

    August 4

  • No band news, of course, just a site update. I added that review of the two New York shows (all show reviews are found in the tour section by the way). And I put a detailed menu on the front page. New color scheme forthcoming.
  • Oh, and the band did not play in Hawaii last week, thanks to the clumsy Anthony Kiedas.

    July 31

  • No word yet on whether the band played their scheduled Hawaii show or their show in Japan for the Fuji Festival (half of which was cancelled due a typhoon).
  • A long and detailed review of the two NY shows will be up in the next couple of days.
  • Long story, but I had to reinstall Windows, meaning all my saved mail and address books are gone (argh). I apologize to anyone who I haven't replied to in the last few days.

    July 27

  • You knew it had to happen. I put some Javascript in the menus to liven them up a bit. You'll need Netscape version 3.0 or above to see them correctly, something which you should have anyway.

    July 24

  • MTV was apparantly at the Mercury Lounge show over the weekend, as they landed an interview with the band in question, resulting in a detailed article concerning GVSB's upcoming album, as well their infamous "sexy" tag. Also in the article were some video clips of the interview, as well as a snippet of a new song from the show itself. Find links to these clips in the video section of this very site.
  • New photos from the band's NY shows in the images section, courtesy of the Intel Festival's official site.
  • Tweaked the menus a bit. Maybe an overall site change or two in the near future....
  • ....near future meaning a few hours later. Yeah, I reworked the world-famous Bughouse logo. It's much simpler now, and I must say that I'm very pleased with the two bass players approach.

    July 21

  • Check out Addicted To Noise's news section for a small review of GVSB's weekend performance, which, along with yarning about how packed the show was, mentions none other than comic Janeane Garafalo as a "big fan" of the band. Tidbit.
  • Following Johnny Temple's lead, Scott McCloud is reportedly starting a new label, called 230 International. More info as it comes in.

    July 20

  • Intel reportedly had a lot of problems broadcasting the Intel Music Festival over the Net, so those of us at our computers heard very little, if anything at all. To those actually at the show, send in a review!
  • I got a brand-spanking new stereo today to hear the soothing sounds of our favorite band even better. Hooray for me.

    July 17

  • Good news: The two New York shows WILL be broadcast over the net. Go here for more info, and don't forget to tune in Friday and Saturday nights at around 11pm. Also, they'll be broadcasting the video of Saturday's concert. Also check out this article for even more info about the event, including a recommendation for GVSB.
  • More good news: GVSB's performance in Hawaii may not be cancelled afterall, but you'd better check with the ticket agency before doing anything rash.

    July 16

  • That rumored Hawaii show with the Red Hot Chili Peppers has been cancelled, due to Anthony Kiedas (RHCP singer) injuring himself. In other touring news, check out the tour section for times and lineups for the two NY shows.

    July 10

  • As promised, the news section is now archived into half-years. For older news, check out the links at the top and bottom of this page.

    July 9

  • Again, a few minor additions like an opinion. Also, I got a report that GVSB are on the soundtrack of an indie film called "Love God," which will be/has been played at the Fantasia Film Festival in Montreal. Any more info is appreciated.
  • I will soon archive this news section, add some kind of form to subscribe to Seven Seas, and play with the menus on each page.
  • If you care, my move was hectic, as expected. Boxes are now everywhere.

    July 2

  • Huh, just when I'm about to move, there are things to report:
  • Apparantly, GVSB aren't that busy recording their new album, as they're playing two New York shows in July for the Intel Music Festival. The first is on the 18th at Brownies, and the second is the 19th at the Mercury Lounge. For those of us unlucky enough to not be anywhere near New York (again), the shows may be broadcast live over the net. Check here for details.
  • There's an unconfirmed rumor that the band will open for the Red Hot Chili Peppers in Hawaii on July 23.
  • Here's an email I recently received that peeved me somewhat:
