First Half, 1997
Well, well...the infamous news section. If I hear anything concerning the band, I'll put it in here. If you happen to know something I don't, mail me as usual.

June 30

  • Some more shows have been scheduled. GVSB will tour with Rage Against The Machine again, this time in South America in October. Also expect an Australian tour in January 98.
  • Speaking of early 98, that's when the tentative release of the new album is. The band started pre-production last week with new producer Nick Launay, and according to the band's manager, the new songs "are all gems....Simply put, these are some of the best songs I've heard." Raise those expectations another notch.
  • Last site update for a bit, as I'm moving into a new house. In the meantime, you can always join the Seven Seas mailing list, being the good GVSB fan that you are. Oh, and if you're ever on IRC, try #GVSB for good measure.

    June 24

  • Oh yeah....a few days ago, I made some more minor adjustments to the site. As you can see, not much (read: nothing) new is going on.
  • Let me use this pointless news update to encourage you to join Seven Seas, the GVSB mailing list, if you have not done so already (and I know some of you have not). It'll be good for you AND your community.

    June 16

  • I've added a text discography for those who just can't wait. Also quite a few other minor adjustments here and there.

    June 15

  • I replaced the Themes tab with....a tab for Seven Seas, a GVSB mailing list I set up. Joining this list is essential for all fans of the band, as it will provide news, tour dates, opinions of fellow fans, and much more. Further endorsement of Seven Seas as the days of summer roll away....

    June 12

  • Going on vaction for a few days, but when I get back, but get ready to travel the sevenseas. Hush hush....
  • Oh yeah, that New Wet Kojak album, Nasty International, came out on Tuesday, selling out in most record stores within minutes.

    June 9

  • A producer has been chosen for the new album, which is tentatively set to record in August. His name is Nick Launay, and his works include Midnight Oil, Talking Heads, Silverchair, Killing Joke, Gang of Four, and The Birthday Party, to name a few.
  • Eli's been busy lately, remixing albums for Something for Kate and Throneberry, working on some techno music with his side band Americruiser, DJ'ing shows here and there, and possibly doing some stuff for a new Mortal Kombat movie. Mr. Janney is starting to look like Mr. Albini....
  • 7 Seas coming soon....

    June 8

  • No band news, but some site refinements. Those info-packed "notes" are finally online in the discography, where you'll find even more tidbits about each recording.
  • Another GVSB page has made its way to the net. Wilmington is its name, and it's a very welcome change from this site and that other site. The URL: http://www.geocities.com/SunsetStrip/Club/8104/wilming.htm. Bookmark it today!

    May 29

  • Ooh, check out Southern's New Wet Kojak page for some info on their forthcoming album Nasty International, including the cover (which isn't as "nasty" as their first one....heh, I made a joke) and song titles. Aah.
  • Much sight re-tweeking to come soon. Honest.

    May 26

  • Check out ALLSTAR magazine for a little blurb on what NWK, GVSB, and Johnny Temple are working on (May 15th's news). Or, read it right here:

New Wet Kojak, the side project of Girls Against Boys members Johnny Temple and Scott McCloud, are about to have their second album, Nasty Interntional, released on Touch and Go on June 10, and a 12-inch out on Temple's indie label Akashic Records. This follows the project's self- titled 1995 debut on Touch and Go.
"We're doing a 12-inch vinyl- only remix of two 10-minute songs, 'Extended Tongue' and 'Extended Miramix' -- we're very self- indulgent," says Temple. "It should be out in two or three weeks."
Temple also tells us that the next Girls Against Boys album will be a bit different. "There's more of an electronic type thing happening," he says. But he's not concerned about potential talk of the band jumping on the electronica bandwagon. "The electronic bandwagon will have passed us by, by then," he says. "In all honesty, we are. But when we do it it's not going to sound like we're ripping anyone off. Whenever we incorporate anything new, I think we still sound like ourselves."
Meanwhile, Temple's getting more involved in political issues and is in the midst of forming an organization called Public Campaign. "We're trying to rally public support for very tough campaign finance reform laws. I'll try to get high profile artists to get involved," says Temple. "For a long time I've felt that there's so much corporate money in the political system and it is very obvious that many politicians are completely compromised by money they take from large donors. It really corrupts the political system."

  • Look for me to start playing with other windows on the page soon, as I learn some more slick page coding.

    May 18

  • The rumor was true--New Wet Kojak's European tour has been pushed off because of the recording of the new GVSB album. GVSB, however, will play a couple of shows in Japan in July. Check the Tour section for details.
  • I added a non-frames option. If you haven't seen it, check the new Intro page.

    May 14

  • Took a while, but I'm back online and there's much to say....
  • Note that this is just rumor, but rumor has it that the European New Wet Kojak tour will be cancelled, but could be made up September. Again, just a rumor....
  • Craig Oliver, who gave this site its tabs is kindly offering more, so mail me requests, and I'll make sure he gets them.
  • I finally got a listen to the GVSB/GBV split CD. A mini-review (I'm happy to get yours by the way): Produced very loosely, much like the extra tracks on the Disco666 single, the four GVSB songs (Learned It, Vera Cruz, Disco 666, and Kill The Sexplayer....I'll update the discography soon) at times sound almost acoustic, but still capture the GVSB sound well. A good listen to bridge the gap between albums, and GREAT album art, bringing back the feel of Tropic of Scorpio, including the font. I ordered from Parasol Records for those who want to do the same.
  • Updated some stuff on the site (6 pages to be exact), most notably some new (and smaller) video clips, as well as a few more opinions. Keep em coming!
  • Look for even more exciting updates to the site in the coming days as I get my act together.

    April 28

  • Sorry, I promised a "new-look" discography, but it's still the same. It will come, I promise :)....at least it's updated (with, among other things, a Frank Sinatra tribute). Last page update for at least a week. Keep the opinions coming!

    April 26

  • Opinions are finally up on the Opinion page. Thanks to those who contributed, and I hope there will be many more....Also look for an updated discography tommorrow, but then nothing for at least a week, as I must re-locate for the summer.

    April 20

  • Sorry for lack of updates. Just have a couple of small tidbits to report. That GVSB/GBV split CD (see April 2 news) is number 7 on Rolling Stone magazine's "alternative" chart, if that means anything. And, no, our favorite band was not on Kevin Smith's latest Chasing Amy, although it was a darned good flick.
  • Look for opinions to finally posted in the next few days, along with an updated/enhanced discography.

    April 16

  • New color scheme. I'd love to know what you think about it.
  • Speaking of thought, there's now a form on the Opinion page to ease the overwhelming burden of expressing your views. Feel free to use it.

    April 15

  • Yesterday's producer mystery has been solved. The brother-in-law is DAVE Marsh, who produced the GVSB/Guided By Voices split-CD that was just released and reported in April 2nd's news. As for the producer situation, there is still not one confirmed for the new album, but several have met with the band, and a decision will be reached "within the next two weeks."

    April 14

  • If you came for a rumor, here's one: GVSB are not using their longtime producer Ted Nicely for their forthcoming album, but someone named Ted Marsh, who happens to be my friend's girlfriend's roommate's brother-in-law (yes, all elements of a rumor are here).
  • Couple of quick changes to the site: The tabs for Bulletproof Cupid have been updated, and all the background colors have been changed to a uniform white. Look for new colors sometime.
  • Still no response to my opinion plea....

    April 12

  • Oooh, new intro page. I'm sure all of you Tool fans recognize the style. A few other changes to the site on the way. Oh, that leads me to a request: PLEASE send in your opinions about the band, especially the songs, lyrics, etc. I'll post them in the Opinion section ASAP. I think there's more to this band than typical high school punk image rock that's ruining today's music and really feel this site should bring that out--something only an open forum can do. Sorry for the rambling--I just want to bring this site and the band to another level.

    April 10

  • Not related to GVSB, but I just wanted to report the breaking up of Soundgarden, in case you hadn't heard. They were truly one of the defining/best bands of this current music wave and they'll be missed. Check out Addicted To Noise for more info.
  • Microsoft just released its new browser, which is integrated with Windows. Notice that this humble GVSB page looks much worse in Explorer than it does in Netscape. This may change as the Microsoft monopoly becomes greater....Sorry for the lack of GVSB news by the way.

    April 8

  • Woah, new frame setup. Sorry, but the old "Other" section was getting way too big, so I figured I'd kill it, meaning I'd have to find a place for everything, etc, so I changed the menu. A summary of what's different:
    • The menu is now divided into three separate menus (click the arrows to scroll them). I tried to have each menu related and would love to know what you think of the new design.
    • Mr. Craig Oliver was kind enough to send in a couple of tabs, and he promises more. Hence, there is now a tabs section (second menu).
    • I consolidated the Bio/FAQ page and Side Projects page into one history section (first menu).
    • The themes have their own section now (second menu). It's pretty empty now, though.
    • I put the sounds and videos into one multimedia section (third menu).
    • All contributors, copyrights, etc. are now found at the bottom of the main page.
Other changes planned include an enhanced discography (with links to cool liner notes, etc) and maybe a different color scheme (this is what I'm really paranoid about).

  • Hey, I actually have some GVSB-related news too. New Wet Kojak, Scott and Johnny's other band, are tentatively going on a European tour in July. Check the tour section for more details/dates.

    April 2

  • Check out the latest catalog update to Parasol Records and find there a split album with Guided By Voices (Yup, GBV vs. GVSB). GVSB's 4 songs were recorded in the studio for "Inside Dave's Garage" radio show, and the album is released on Radiopaque Records and benefits the Washington Free Clinic. Check out Addicted To Noise (April 2nd's news) for more info.
  • Those of you who saw Viva Variety (with former members of The State) last night may have noticed that Eli wrote another theme song with Craig Wedren, whose band Shudder To Think had a live performance. If the show stays on the air, don't be surprised to see GVSB perform too.

    March 31

  • Freeloader, a new e-zine has an extensive interview with Johnny that gives really good insight into what the band is doing now, namely writing/recording songs for the new album. It's chalk full of other info too; check it out indeed.
  • I made a few minor changes to the site, mainly to the sounds section; also modified some of my HTML with the ALT tag.
  • The site finally made it on Yahoo, so you should know where to go if you somehow lose this address.

    March 20

  • Got a letter from Eli the other day congratulating the site and informing me of an April 6th Rutgers show.
  • Oh yeah, check for a little bit of new stuff in the Articles and Images sections.

    March 19

  • It's done. It's registered all over the place. Please remember that it'll still be changing a lot (see those holes in the Other section?), so bookmark and return--you're bound to find something new. And, if I haven't emphasized this enough, I'd love to know what you think about the site. Just email me: egery@umich.edu.

    March 10

  • I'm back from spring break and will be tweaking the site for the next few days. After that, I'll register it to all the major search engines, music sites, etc. Changes you can see right now are on the lyrics page (just a few assorted lyrics) and the tour page.
  • I'm now in touch with GVSB's manager, and he kindly sent me a long letter detailing what's going on with the band. Here's the key points:
    • The band is hard at work on their new album for Geffen.
    • Five new songs were debuted at the "very sold out" March 1 show in New York.
    • There's a tentative European tour in the works for July.
    • New Wet Kojak (with Scott and Johnny) just finished recording their second album, due out in June.
    • Eli's remixing for Ruby, the Sneaker Pimps, among others.
    • Alexis recorded a track for the "Flyin' Traps" record, which features a bunch of drumming tracks from (what else) a bunch of drummers, including Matt Cameron (Soundgarden). The track is called "Don't Ruin me Gorgeous" and also features Scott.
  • Spin Magazine named GVSB #38 in their list of the 40 most "vital" artists today (NIN was #1).

    February 27

  • Disappointing news : the page isn't done on the eve of my spring break, something I promised myself and the rest of you. All I can say is sorry. Bunches of changes to the site are swarming in my head, but all I really plan to do is add more frames, esp. to the articles and images pages. Oh, and, of course, the Other section is in shambles, but that'll change too.
  • Back to the band, they're going to be recording the new album in April and May, meaning it'll be released sometime in the fall, a prime time for musical releases. Just a guess, though. Thanks a bunch to Regina Braidotti for the info.
  • Speaking of new releases, let me plug 50,000 BC by Shudder To Think. It's really amazing....
  • That's about it. I'm off for a week of break. To all going to the March 1 NY show: enjoy it to the fullest. And to the rest of you, in the words of the immortal David Yow, "Never shit in your own mouth." Cya.

    February 13

  • Not much happening, except for major renovations in the page. "House of GVSB" was trashed as a name during a listening of VLux (wonder what song I was listening to at the time....) Anyway, the renovations continue, and I hope the site's operational by March.
  • GVSB's playing a show at the Knitting Factory in New York on March 1. Otherwise, they're supposedly working on their first album for Geffen.
  • Speaking of new albums, Shudder To Think, good friends of GVSB, are coming out with "50,000 BC" on February 25.

    January 17

  • Gavin Rossdale, Bush's lead singer, named GVSB as one of the bands he would like to tour with. Hmm....
  • House of GVSB was named as SPIN magazine's #5 album of the year. Yippee.
  • All of you DCers can treat yourselves to a couple of GVSB shows on anuary 24 and 25 at the Black Cat. Lucky bastards....
