• you have a good point vegeta. i was too dismissive of freakonica. i couldnt get fully into it at the time probly cause i was too absorbed in the earlier albums. but thats how gvsb albums are, they dont impress you right off, you have to immerse yourself in it. since then it's really grown on me, and i can say it's a diamond like the rest. i've always appreciated the raw honesty and probing insight of the band and freakonica is surely that. and youre right, i wouldnt label it electronica either, they use some eletronica but they fuse it into something deeper, its more internalized, like a dream.

i was yapping with alexis and scott before a show a few months ago, i commented on how i couldnt get into freakonica and alexis replied they were going to make the next album more like the older ones (probly as a result of all the negative criticism and unappreciation of freakonica of which i regretedly added to), which i think is a mistake. they've always been a band that evolved forward and i'm more curious to see where they take themselves from here.

• 1)I just listened to the track "we have to figure it out tonight" by THE BEATSTEAKS and it's sounding, in my opinion, just like a GVSB clone, what about them ?
who are they ?
2) Lyrics like "when you have nothing in the lemon..." or "when you have spiders on your ceiling..." are french translated in english meaning : "when you are crazy..."
I was wondering if it keeps the same meaning in english, or if it's just "poetry".
3)I'm french and it's impossible to get any post-cruise yourself album there, is there an MP3 site where I can download them ?

• freakonica is not electronica. if you want electronica, go check out anything on DHR records. For anyone who complains about GvsB's suits and "Gucci and Calvin Klein" lyrics, they always were a band that reflected on their immediate surroundings. if they are in a world of gucci etc, then they will write about it.end of story.

• Freak*on*ica was a disappointment for me as well. I've met the band and found them to be very cool, especially Eli. They signed my Disco 666 CD single. After earlier albums Venus, Cruise, 80s vs. 90s...I couldn't get into House of GVSB as much. When I was in Florida I lucked into the just-out Park Avenue CD single from the upcoming Freak*on*ica for $3.98. I tried to get into it, I really did. Roxy is my favorite song on the album. I hope they get back to the basics of what made them great. What happened?

• hey pals. i saw GvsB play in Athens Ohio late April. they were good. got the crowd all worked up. unfortunately many of the dorks in the crowd did the "woop woop" raise the roof thing, which disgusted and embarrassed me deeply. they played alot of their old shit. i talked to Alexis and Scott before the show and they denied rumors of a possible break-up in June. glad to hear it. they didnt seem very interested in talking to me. apparently i wasnt a horny groupie. its understandeable i guess, but also sad. these guys need to put their johnsons away for a while and make a good album to bury that freakonica mistake. regardless, eli was very friendly and i think i want to have gay sex with him now.

• oh yeah i must say that the liner notes to 80s vs 90s and tropic of scorpio are the best liner notes in the history of rock and roll. if you want real music listeners to listen to your music, gvsb, maybe you could go with something more that flavor instead of this electronic matrix looking shit. hell even the prodigy can do decent artwork for their albums. whats your excuse?
six finger satellite are a good band if you like gvsb but not just cause you want to fuck them. the guys in the band are a bunch of coke-head jerks but the music is good. at least its about the music.

• Saw GVSB for the first time in Boulder, CO 1996. One of the best shows I've ever seen. The band was really dirty and filthy and ragged looking. They set up their own instruments and everyone was talking to Johnny like he was their roadie. Awesome indie rock show, way up there with the Jesus Lizard and the Melvins. Loved their first five records...and then Freakonica came out, and all this fashion icon shit. Freakonica may be one of the most disappointing albums I have ever heard in my life. The music sounded just like Republica, if anyone remembers them. They pushed this look what ladies' men we are shit way too far, and no straight guy I think could ever enjoy a record like that. A little soul is cool and all but geez, I don't know where they get off making fun of N'Sync, at least they don't act like they are alternative or anything.
GVSB please get your shit together, and put out another cool record. Who knows half of Freakonica MIGHT have been cool if it was recorded as just four guys in a room you know none of that fucking candy coating.
Ever since hearing that album it has completely changed my view of the band and now its hard to listen to old records. Its like, is this genuine or a bunch of candy asses just trying to get laid?

• why hello there. how are you all. thats great. i really enjoy GvsB. i must conclude Venus Lux #1 is indeed the masterpiece of the bunch, HOUSE OF coming in a close second. what happened to these guys, now their singing about Gucci and Calvin Klein and using cheap electronica and hair gel. im rather dissapointed. hopefully they realize this new concept is crap and return to their old sound. im not saying to not progress and refinee themselves, just not in the way theyre doing now, because its just lame.yes there are good songs on freak-on-ica, i like songs 1, 2, 5, 6..not the sparkly clean production just the songs themselves..roxy is the cut of the crop i'd say.....the rest is just a major dissapointment.

regardless, at least they have Venus and House Of to be proud of, those albums are the shit. ~ Grog

Also, just wanted to say that really, what you need to do is take every single GVSB song, and play them on a repeated loop, put each one for 90 min. on a tape and just listen to the same song over and over..., b/c there are no bad, or filler songs on an album. GVSB is the only band I have ever heard that are capable of producing an album, from which there are NO FILLER SONGS, NO BAD SONGS, NOTHING BUT PURE BRILLIANCE. NEways...

Nice to know you weren't dropped by the big bad major label. That would have been a real shame, but hardly surprising since majors these days seem to care more about selling products like Offspring and Britney Spears than promoting good music. So now that all is fine and dandy again, please get your asses over to Europe for some gigs, drinks, dancing and getting lost on the way to airport hotels.

• Think I might've been the person so viciously slighted in the review of the LA show. Was probably under the influence of euphoria-inducing narcotics at the time of the grotesquely-inaccurate comments about GSVB's hometown, etc. But unfortunately some of us can't spend all our time faitfully catalogue-ing the detailed lineage of our favorite bands, and instead choose to GET A LIFE.
Anyway, met the band at the LA show (and yes, i did introduce my girl to them), and found Scott to be a pretty cool guy--easygoing, articulate, and seemingly comfortable with having to converse with the fan base (oh, the horror!). The others just sort of stood around smiling uncomfortably, waiting for an opportunity to flee back to the tourbus, one imagines.
Went to the Santa Barbara show the next weekend, and spoke to Scott again, concluding in a friendly exchange of money for pharmaceuticals, during which he not-so-discreetly mentioned that my car "smelled kinda bad." If someone talks to him, I'd be interested to find out how those 2 capsules worked out for him.
Anyway, he was a good guy, and I'm disappointed to hear that the band was in "Cigarettes," since I had wanted to use them in my film. Rats.

• probably everyone in here will disagree, but freakonica suffers from studio over-production. i really enjoy their previous ones, but this one is beyond me. no matter how much i hear it, i just don't like it.

• Went to the premiere of 200 Cigarettes and although it was a rather... drag, the GVSB cameo was uplifting (I wasn't aware!). They play at a punk club Gaby & Christina sneak into while searching for a phone. Hardly recognized their faces, easily recognized their sound.

• Hmmm...I must say, it's rather disturbing to read through this guestbook only to discover masses of teeny-bopper girls more obsessed with Eli's ass than with his musical ability. Please, we don't need to hear about your ridiculous pre-teen obsessions. Control your animalistic impulses and focus on the music. Oh, didn't you hear? GVSB are a BAND, not magazine poster children. PS: They should have stuck with T&G. Stay indie.

• GVSB rocks! They are a relief in a world of Third Eye Blind and New Radicals. Modern rock radio sucks because they don't play enough GVSB. Then again, Geffen Records hasn't given them a good enough marketing push. Anyway, I got to see them twice in Cleveland in '98 (once when they came on the Freak*On*Ica tour and once again when opening for Garbage which was an all around excellent show! GVSB kicks ass! Kill the Sexplayer!

It kicked some serious ass. i'm not sure what size they are used to playing in front of but there wasn't much since the metro's pretty small. I just think that they did damn good as far as the energy went. some bands don't play with as much in front of small amounts of people. i also really like the opening bands.

The guys played here Sunday night. Although the band delivered a set that was nothing less than INCREDIBLE the reaction/turn out was less than... well let's just say it sucked. There were a core of about a dozen (I'm not shitting you) that tried to get the crowd of 200+ revved, but the majority were content to stand there with their arms crossed, staring blankly at the stage. Gawd I hate All Ages shows... A copy of the set list will be posted later (if interested)
Aside from the laggards in the audience GVSB KICKED ASS!!! Next time I'll party with'em in Minneapolis... man, I hope they don't frown on Fargo too harshly... *sigh*

• I'm a GVSB fan since 92 or so and I'm really disappointed with the new album...It sounds so clean, fuck what the hell happened with GVSB!!!! Oh well, better luck next time, in the mean time I will listen to the new SHELLAC, FUGAZI, JO44, UNWOUND, LUNGFISH, MAKE UP, ............. Visit my website

• PIcked up Freak*on*ica today (used). Sounds pretty damn good, only a little technoish. I've benn a fan since I picked up the "clerks" soundtrack a while back and discovered that "Kill the Sex Player" kicked ass. I though they sounded like the Jesus Lizard, so I had to like 'em.

• What's on my mind? Well... being a devout worshipper of GvsB, I bought the new CD, gave it an earful, and cried... cried long and hard. What the hell happened? Yes, Scott indeed sounds a bit nasal... Eli sounds a bit hoarse... the music sounds reminiscent of everything on the radio... but being a true-blue fan, I am learning to accept their new direction...but they owe me Vera Cruz at the show I see. (Exorcisto kicks ass, though)

• Just picked up Freak*on*ica... terrific, terrific album. I've been a fan of GVSB for a while, and I have to say that this album, it seems to me, is a slight departure from earlier work. The band, who first caught my eye with their heavy double bass work and mix of hardcore and dancebeats, seems to have almost abandoned the dense dual-bass for the less-prevalent-in-earlier-stuff electronic/keyboard/sampled side of their music. The change isn't bad... quite the contrary, the band is still, unmistakably, GVSB--just "bigger." Like I said, though, great album. There's not one song on it I ever want to skip. Great site, by the by.

• Just bought Freakonica. My god, how much better is music gonna get? This one is fucking brilliant!!! Got into GvsB because I saw them at a Therapy? show and was impressed ever since. This record is better than House of GvsB though. Just wanna say good luck to the guys and I hope they get some much deserved recognition

• I just bought FREAK ON ICA two days ago and cannot stop listening to it. It is so, so , so fucking good! I think it's their best ever. The music is so well written and the samples incorporate incredibly, giving them an awesome new sound. My only gripe is that Scott's vocals suffer at times, even sounding like Ogre from Skinny Puppy on some tracks. His still however uses the cool style and lyrics that make them so smooth. I didn't think they could ever write a song as good as VERA CRUZ until i heard EXORCISTO. My car anxiously awaits the CD version.

• FREAK*ON*ICA rules! this record could make them huge... park avenue is quite a sharp single... it's different, yet the same... the production change makes a huge difference in their sound... plus with the additional help of a dj, there's some cool sounds flowing off this record... it was even far more electronic than i expected...

• gvsb definitely rock [but] they need to make their shows more accesible to their fans/ i have known and loved them for years and only got the chance to see them at lollapalooza/ all their nyc shows/soldout/a large,bias,guestlist/ that keeps me and at least 15 of my fellow boogiebabies from ever getting to see them in a small venue/ before they become to popular/ does anyone know what i'm talking about?

• Okay, Scott Weiland's Cool Kiss is very similar to Click Click. I'm curious if GVSB and Scott are friends. Also, is "Plush" on "Tropics of Scorpio" the same Stone Temple Pilots song. E-mail me.
