V/A | SERIES 7 (CD, Koch)
I never saw the movie 'Series 7', but in the enclosed text the writer and director Daniel Minahan tells us the movie is about a reality show in which the contesters are handed a gun. The last one standing wins. In this text Minahan also tells us the reason why he asked Girls Against Boys (GVSB) to compose the movie score and why he chose tracks of other acts like Joy Division and Robbie Kondor. It's nice to read the director's thoughts behind the music that supports this movie. The soundtrack harbours twelve songs of GVSB, of which two aren't instrumental. Those two vocal songs ('One Dose of Truth' and 'Tweaker') are of really high quality and would have fitted in nicely on their last albums. 'Tweaker' is the sound we know from GVSB, with the distorted guitars and bass, the samples of Eli Janney, and the harsh oneliners of the singers Scott McCloud and Eli Janney. On 'One Dose of Truth', GVSB are inspired by the new wave sound of the early 80s. On this song the almost futuristic rock of GVSB is combined with an 80s syntheziser. The other ten songs vary from fully instrumental songs (like 'Let's Get It On') to sound impressions (e.g. 'Ray of Hope' and 'The Set-Up'), but always have the distinctive GVSB feeling. The songs of the other acts include the new wave classic 'Love Will Tear Us Apart' by Joy Division and the acoustic songs 'Sweetness of Mine' (by GVSB-engineer Eli Janney and singer Julie stephanek), MenKing's 'Wedding Serenade', and the instrumental 'Death Pact', performed by Robbie Kondor (which resembles 'Sweetness of Mine' a lot). Judging by the music, 'Series 7' isn't a feelgood movie and does not want to reach a big audience, but in its originality this soundtrack beats many soundtracks of the big Hollywood productions.
